Preparing for scalp micropigmentation (SMP) involves several important steps to ensure the procedure goes smoothly and achieves your desired results.
Please follow these guidelines for the best results:
- Do NOT take Fish Oil or Aspirin 1 week before unless prescribed by a doctor.
- Do NOT tan. Avoid direct sunlight to avoid burning and peeling of the skin.
- Do NOT drink alcohol 24 hours before your procedure because alcohol thins your blood.
- Do NOT consume stimulants (caffeine, energy drinks) 24 hours prior to your procedure.
- Do NOT wear any hair pieces the week before.
- Focus on relaxing and get a good night’s rest before your procedure.
- Eat a healthy and hearty meal before your procedure and make sure you are well hydrated, and drink plenty of water. This will ensure you have a great and positive start to your procedure that typically lasts 3-4 hours. You are welcome to bring your own snack / beverage to your appointment.
Please follow the following Pre-Care instructions to prepare your scalp for optimal results:
LONG HAIR:
- No hair dye 3 weeks minimum before your appointment.
- Shampoo your hair the night before your appointment.
SHORT HAIR/BALD/SHAVED:
- One week before your initial appointment, moisturize your scalp daily. This will ensure your scalp is in the best possible condition and hydrated which will allow the pigment to be properly absorbed. If your skin is oily then do NOT moisturize. Too much oil in the skin is just as bad as the skin being too dry.
- Use gentle, non-abrasive shampoo. (Do NOT use Head & Shoulders)
- If you use clippers, use a size #0 guard TWO DAYS BEFORE your procedure.
- If you shave your head with a razor blade, do it TWO or THREE days before your procedure (e.g. if your appointment is on Saturday, you can shave your head with a razor blade on Wednesday).
- Do NOT use a razor on your scalp within 24 hours of the scheduled procedure. It is critical that we see all natural hair in order to properly blend the hair follicles.
Post Care instructions:
After getting scalp micropigmentation (SMP), it’s crucial to follow proper post-care instructions to promote healing and achieve the best results. Here are some post-care guidelines:
Avoid Water and Sweat: For the first 4-5 days after SMP, avoid getting your scalp wet to allow the pigment to settle properly. This includes avoiding sweating excessively or engaging in activities that could cause you to sweat.
Gentle Washing: After the initial healing period (usually after 4-5 days), you can gently wash your scalp with a mild, pH-balanced shampoo. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the scalp harshly.
Pat Dry: When drying your scalp after washing, pat it dry gently with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing the treated area to prevent irritation or premature removal of pigment.
Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect your scalp from direct sun exposure for at least the first month after SMP. Use a hat or sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to shield your scalp from UV rays, as sun exposure can fade the pigment.
Avoid Swimming: Refrain from swimming in pools, oceans, or hot tubs for at least two weeks post-treatment to prevent exposure to chlorine, saltwater, or bacteria that could irritate the scalp. Steer clear of saunas, steam rooms, and any activities that may cause excessive sweating for the first month after SMP, as this can affect the pigment retention.
Avoid Scratching or Picking: Resist the urge to scratch or pick at your scalp, as this can disrupt the healing process and cause premature fading of the pigment.
Moisturize: After the initial healing phase, you can apply a gentle moisturizer to keep your scalp hydrated. Choose a product recommended by your PMU artist to ensure it’s suitable for your healing skin.
**Following these post-care instructions diligently can help you achieve long-lasting and satisfactory results from your scalp micropigmentation procedure. Always consult with your PMU artist if you have any questions or concerns during the healing process.**
