Scalp Micropigmentation FAQ

Appointments are typically 3- 3.5 hours depending on the volume and density of the desired results. This includes a thorough in person consultation, before & after photos, mapping, the tattoo procedure, and instructions on how to care for your procedure after the appointment. Sessions are based on the needs of the client, and a consultation is required to go over the specifics with your PMU artist.

During the SMP procedure, a specialized tattooing device is used to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the scalp. While the sensation is often described as similar to getting a tattoo, the discomfort may be less intense since the needles used for SMP are smaller and the depth of penetration is shallower. Pain can vary depending on individual pain tolerance and the sensitivity of the scalp.

• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It’s generally not recommended to undergo cosmetic tattooing procedures while pregnant or breastfeeding. The effects of the pigments on the fetus or infant are not well-studied, and there may be potential risks involved.
• People with certain medical conditions: Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders, autoimmune diseases, skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, or a history of keloid scarring, may have an increased risk of complications from SMP. It’s essential to discuss your medical history with a healthcare provider before undergoing SMP to ensure that the procedure is safe for you.
• Recent hair transplant surgery: Individuals who have recently undergone hair transplant surgery may need to wait for the scalp to fully heal before undergoing SMP. It’s essential to allow the scalp to heal completely and for any transplanted hair follicles to establish before considering SMP as a complementary procedure.
• Allergies or Sensitivities: If you have known allergies or sensitivities to tattoo pigments or topical anesthetics, it’s essential to inform your PMU artist beforehand. They can perform a patch test to check for any adverse reactions before proceeding with the full procedure.

The healing process for SMP can vary from person to person, but generally, it takes about 5 to 10 days for the initial healing to occur. 

• After the SMP procedure: The scalp may appear slightly red and swollen, and the pigmented areas may appear darker than expected. Some individuals may also experience minor discomfort or tenderness at the treatment site. These symptoms are normal and usually subside within a few hours to a few days.
• Scabbing and flaking: As the scalp heals, you may notice small scabs or flakes forming over the pigmented areas. This is a natural part of the healing process and helps to protect the newly pigmented skin as it regenerates. It’s important to avoid picking or scratching at the scabs to prevent premature pigment loss or scarring.
• Color settling: Over the following days and weeks, the initial darkening of the pigmented areas will gradually fade as the skin heals and the pigment settles into place. The final color of the SMP may take several weeks to fully develop, and it’s normal for some fading or lightening to occur during this time.

The complete healing process typically takes about 2 to 4 weeks, although individual experiences may vary. During this time, it’s essential to follow any aftercare instructions provided by your SMP technician, such as avoiding direct sunlight, refraining from strenuous activity, and using gentle cleansers and moisturizers on the scalp.

All SMP Services include 3 sessions typically spaced about 2-4 weeks apart.  We will schedule follow up appointments after each session.  After the third session, we charge a fee for annual or semi-annual color boosts, maintenance touch-ups are typically needed every 3-5 years. • Swelling and Tenderness: It’s common for the scalp to be red and tender after the procedure. This sensation usually subsides in 24-48 hours but the client can take a pain reliever after the procedure as needed.
• Dryness and flaking: As the scalp heals, you may experience some dryness and flaking. It’s important to keep the area moisturized and be sure to follow the after care instructions provided by your PMU artist.
• Itching: Some itching or tingling sensations may occur during the healing process. Avoid scratching or rubbing the treated area to prevent irritation or infection.
• Color variation: The color may appear darker immediately after the procedure and then lighten as they heal. It’s normal for the color to settle and change slightly during the healing process.
• Allergic reactions: While rare, allergic reactions to the pigments or numbing agents used during the procedure are possible. Be sure to inform your PMU artist of any known allergies beforehand.

During the consultation, the artist will assess your scalp and hair, discuss your desired outcome, and explain the procedure, including potential risks and aftercare. This is also a good time to ask any questions or show any reference photos you may have.

Yes, SMP can be removed, but laser removal would be the best recommendation for removal, which would be done by a medical professional.
