Frequently Asked Questions
What is Lip Blush?
Lip blush is a cosmetic tattooing technique that enhances the natural color and shape of the lips. It involves depositing pigment with a handheld machine into the lips to create a semi-permanent tint, providing a youthful and defined appearance. This procedure is popular for its ability to add color and correct uneven lip tones. Results can last 1-5 years depending on lifestyle.
How long is the appointment?
Appointments are typically 2.5 – 3.5 hours depending on the style and artist. This includes a thorough in person consultation, before & after photos, lip shaping, the tattoo procedure, and instructions on how to care for your lips after the appointment.
Is the procedure painful?
Pain levels vary from person to person. Numbing cream is typically applied to the lips and surrounding areas before and during the procedure. This allows the numbing agent to take effect and desensitize the skin, making the tattooing process more comfortable for the client. It’s essential to follow the artist’s instructions regarding the use of numbing cream and any other pre-procedure guidelines to ensure the best possible experience and results. However, it’s worth noting that while numbing creams can help reduce discomfort, some degree of sensitivity or discomfort may still be experienced during the procedure.
Who should avoid Lip Blush services?
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It’s generally not recommended to undergo cosmetic tattooing procedures, including lip blush, while pregnant or breastfeeding. The effects of the pigments on the fetus or infant are not well-studied, and there may be potential risks involved.
- Active Cold Sores or Oral Herpes: If you have active cold sores or oral herpes outbreaks, it’s best to wait until the sores have healed completely before getting a lip blush treatment. Tattooing over active cold sores can spread the infection and may lead to complications. If it is not active, the client should take preventative and post care to prevent flare ups by taking supplements or prescribed medication.
- Certain Medical Conditions: Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as autoimmune disorders, bleeding disorders, or skin conditions affecting the lips, may not be suitable candidates for lip blush. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist to assess whether the procedure is safe for you.
- Allergies or Sensitivities: If you have known allergies or sensitivities to tattoo pigments or topical anesthetics, it’s essential to inform your cosmetic tattoo artist beforehand. They can perform a patch test to check for any adverse reactions before proceeding with the full procedure.
- Recent Lip Fillers or Injections: If you’ve recently had lip fillers or injections, it’s generally recommended to wait until the lips have fully healed and settled before undergoing a lip blush treatment. This allows for better symmetry and prevents potential interference with the healing process.

What is the aftercare process?
Please see our Pre Care & After Care page for all questions & info on the Pre Care & After Care for Lip Blush services.
How long is the healing process?
The healing process can vary from person to person, but typically it takes around 7-14 days for the initial healing. During this time, you may experience some swelling, tenderness, and flaking as the skin heals and the pigment settles. It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by the artist to ensure proper healing and long-lasting results. After the initial healing period, the color may appear lighter than expected, but it will gradually darken over the next few weeks as the skin fully regenerates. Full healing and the final result usually take about 4 to 6 weeks.
When should I get a touch up? How much is it?
We offer a complimentary touch up between 6–10 weeks from your initial appointment to perfect the shape and color. After that, we charge a fee for annual or semi-annual color boosts, maintenance touch-ups are typically needed every 1-2 years. If you are unsure if you need a touchup, feel free to send us a photo.
What are the potential side effects and risks?
- Swelling and Tenderness: It’s common for the lips to swell slightly after the procedure. Your lips may feel tender or sore for a few days following the procedure. This discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. This usually subsides within a few days.
- Dryness and flaking: As the lips heal, you may experience some dryness and flaking. It’s important to keep the lips moisturized and be sure to follow the after care instructions provided by your PMU artist.
- Itching: Some itching or tingling sensations may occur during the healing process. Avoid scratching or rubbing the treated area to prevent irritation or infection.
- Color variation: The color of your lips may appear darker immediately after the procedure and then lighten as they heal. It’s normal for the color to settle and change slightly during the healing process.
- Allergic reactions: While rare, allergic reactions to the pigments or numbing agents used during the procedure are possible. Be sure to inform your PMU artist of any known allergies beforehand.
- Cold Sores or Herpes breakout: If the client has a history of cold sores or herpes then the abrasion to the lips can trigger a break out. Please see your medical provider for prescription medications or over the counter supplements such as L-lysine can be taken for preventative and post care 7 days before and after treatment.
What should I expect during my consultation?
During the consultation, the artist will assess your skin type, discuss your desired outcome, and explain the procedure, including potential risks and aftercare. This is also a good time to ask any questions or show any reference photos you may have.
Can I choose the shape and color of my Lip Blush service?
Yes. However, it’s important to work closely with your artist to ensure that the choices you make complement your natural lip shape and skin tone. They will determine the best lip shape based on your facial features and preferences. They will outline the desired shape before applying the pigment to ensure that you are happy with the result. The final shape has to be within the vermillion border of the lips to prevent uneven healing as the facial skin and lip skin are two different textures and can accept the pigment differently.
Lip blush pigments come in a variety of shades, ranging from natural pinks and nudes to deeper reds and berries. Your PMU artist will help you select a color that compliments your skin tone and achieve the desired look. Keep in mind that the color may appear darker immediately after the procedure and will lighten up to 50% as your lips heal. During your consultation with your PMU artist, you can discuss your preferences for both shape and color, and they can provide recommendations based on their expertise and experience. It’s important to communicate openly and clearly to ensure that you are satisfied with the final result.
Can the procedure be reversed or removed?
Lip blush, like other forms of permanent makeup, is designed to be long-lasting, but it’s not necessarily permanent. While the pigment is intended to fade naturally over time, there are some methods for removing or correcting lip blush if desired. Complete removal is more challenging and may require multiple sessions. We do offer two types of removal (link to removal page), that can aid in lightening the previous permanent makeup enough for us to work over and create new lip blush for you if necessary. It’s important to consult with a qualified and experienced PMU artist before attempting any form of removal or correction. They can assess your individual situation and recommend the best course of action based on your needs and goals. Additionally, it’s crucial to have realistic expectations about the results of removal or correction procedures, as complete removal may not always be possible, and multiple sessions may be required for significant changes.
